Brinsley Animal Rescue helps rescue and rehabilitate wild birds in need, each year releasing over 100 wild birds following treatment from injuries, illness or having been hand reared. The charity was in desperate need of new aviaries for larger birds, such as birds of prey. Their existing set up was leading to birds spending extended time in their wildlife hospital waiting for aviary space and blocking ‘hospital beds’. Aviary time is critical to help some birds rebuild flight muscles or regrow feathers. The Belforte Foundation awarded a grant of £5600 to construct two large steel aviaries, complete with a concrete base, followed by an additional grant of £3590 to extend the aviaries to four.

The new aviaries will be used to treat over 50 wild birds a year, predominantly birds of prey. The aviaries will allow the charity to increase the birds’ chances of a full recovery and better prepare them for the wild, and have already started helping many birds on their road to recovery. The grant made a real difference as there are very few wild animal rescues in the area with expertise and capacity to take large birds such as birds of prey, herons etc, and in the past the charity had had to turn them away. Now, the aviaries will increase their capacity to recue more as well as improve their capabilities to help.
